Here at Grace UCC we have many mission projects. One of our most recent was choosing to sponsor a woman through Women for Women International. Her name is Candide Makarutabana who lives in Rwanda (picture below). One of our mission team members, Michele W., will lead the contact with her. Some questions/ information from her bio:

   * How many people live in your household? Answer- 11.

   * Does your dwelling have electricity? Answer- No.

   * What is the main source of lighting in your dwelling? Answer- Candles, torches or flashlight.

   * Does you dwelling have a source of water? Answer- No.

   * Have you lost any family members from war, violence, poverty, illness or political oppression? Answer- yes.

(From Women for Women International) Women in Rwanda:

"The situation of the Rwandan women who participate in our program is extremely difficult. The disastrous consequences of the 1994 genocide have weighed heavily on the women of Rwanda. Many have witnessed the murder of their loved ones, and some have been raped and brutalized. Through years of fighting, destruction and displacement, Rwandan women have struggled to support and sustain their families. Injury, death and the loss of family breadwinners have forced women to assume a greater role in providing for their dependents, a role which has become increasingly more difficult with the slow pace of reconstruction efforts, waning international aid, loss and destruction of homes, and high unemployment rates."
