Welcome to Journey through the Bible!
“There is, in a word, nothing comfortable about the Bible -- until we manage to get so used to it that we make it comfortable for ourselves. But then we are perhaps too used to it and too at home in it. Let us not be too sure we know the Bible ... just because we have learned not to have problems with it. Have we perhaps learned ... not to really pay attention to it? Have we ceased to question the book and be questioned by it?” - Thomas Merton from his book Opening the Bible.
You are about to embark on an adventure (yes, we are going to study the whole Bible, book by book).
We will meet every Wednesday night from 7-8:30 p.m. at the church office at 18 Court St. See schedule, topics and handouts below.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:
Don't worry about packing much for your trip. All you need to bring with you on this journey are;
- an openness to God and to what is studied.
- companions to join you on the way.
- a Bible.
ITINERARY:
In each session you will be offered some hints for what to look for as you read the Bible text,
and then you will be guided through "four dimensions" of study. Each is intended to help you
through a well-rounded appreciation and application of the Bible.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR EACH SESSION:
Although you will gain much if all you do is show up for the Bible study, you can do a few things to gain even more:
- Read in advance the Bible passage mentioned in the section What to Watch For, using the summaries and hints as you read.
- During your Bible reading, answer the questions in Dimension 1.
- Read the rest of the session in your study book or .pdf handout.
- Try to daily read the Bible passages suggested in Dimension 4. Note that the Bible texts listed in Dimension 4 do not relate to a particular session. But if you continue with this daily routine, by the end of the you will have read all of that portion of the Bible.

Beginning Wednesday, March 2, there will be an (at least) eight week Lenten Study, based on Jim Wallis' book Rediscovering Values, held on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. in the church office (18 Court St.). (The Journey through the Bible series will pick up again after Easter.)

The seven-week study guide is designed to spark lively discussion for small groups. Using Rediscovering Values as the primary text (see the links below to order), this study guide works with the Lenten themes of fasting, Christian growth, penitence, conversion, and simplicity to find moral clarity in the nation's current economic insecurity. Each session includes a bible verse and quote that illustrates the weekly topic, a relevant excerpt from Rediscovering Values, and follow up questions for discussion.
Study themes: Week 1: Fasting & Idolatry; Week 2: Transformation & Conversion; Week 3: Faith & Contentment; Week 4: Work & Vocation; Week 5: Lament & Compassion; Week 6: Humility & Authority; Week 7: Hope & Courage (we may spend more than one week on a theme).
The study guide has been obtained. (You do not need to read the book in order to be a part of the study as the guide contains paragraphs and themes taken from the book; however, reading the book does add to the overall understanding of the topic and theme for each week.) We will begin the study in the Grace UCC church office on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. The study will run for at least eight weeks.
